Oklahoma Leads on Income-Tax Repeal

The state has proposed a radically pro-growth agenda.

January 30, 2012 4:00 A.M.
By Phil Kerpen & Stuart Jolly

When Ron Paul talks about repealing the income tax and replacing it with nothing, most people think it can’t be done. But at least on the state level, it can. In fact, there are nine states, including Paul’s home state of Texas, that don’t levy income taxes. Those states have far outperformed high-income-tax states on every measure of economic success. Now Oklahoma is poised to fully repeal its income tax and join the ranks of non-income-tax states. While Oklahoma is already a relatively business-friendly, low-tax state, income-tax repeal would launch it into the top tier of the most economically competitive states and the best places to live and work.

The Welfare Reform Model for Medicaid

Critics predicted disaster for block grants in 1996. They were proven wrong.

APRIL 13, 2011

By PETER FERRARA AND PHIL KERPEN

One of the greatest bipartisan policy successes of recent decades was welfare reform, enacted into law by a Republican Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton in 1996. As House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) has proposed in his budget, those reforms should now be extended to Medicaid and beyond.

New Hampshire smacks down cap and trade

Published: 4:05 PM 02/23/2011
By Phil Kerpen

The New Hampshire House of Representatives today voted overwhelmingly — 246 to 104 — for New Hampshire to become the first state to repeal an up-and-running global warming cap-and-trade energy tax system. The state senate is expected to follow suit with a similarly veto-proof repeal. The move has major implications both in the region and nationally.

Fleeing Democrats choose Illinois, and failure

Published: 4:29 PM 02/22/2011
By Phil Kerpen

It is fitting that Illinois is the destination of choice for Democratic legislators desperate to flee their states to prevent newly elected majorities from delivering on the budget reforms they campaigned on. Perhaps the fleeing legislators from Wisconsin and Indiana watched the budget trickery in Illinois last month and knew it was a safe place for big tax-and-spenders.

It's the Unions' Last Stand, and Taxpayers Must Fight the Good Fight

The battle raging in Wisconsin has huge implications for all American taxpayers, who will be forced to shoulder the burden of out of control government spending at the state, local and federal level. The bosses -- either from the union or the Democratic Party -- who depend on a steady flow of union dues into their political coffers are desperate because they understand the stakes.

So, too, must taxpayers.

This fight will decide whether union bosses can bleed taxpayers dry no matter what happens in elections, or whether electing limited-government conservatives can result in meaningful change.

An Opportunity, Not an Endorsement

The political landscape has changed, and Washington will now be held accountable for everything it does.

Tim Phillips & Phil Kerpen
November 3, 2010 3:30 P.M.

Over the past several years, we’ve had the honor of working with millions of free-market activists across the country through our organization, Americans for Prosperity. These activists have taken time away from their families, their work, and their lives to get involved in the public-policy process in an unprecedented way. Washington has ignored their concerns and pushed forward with a big-government agenda of out-of-control spending, regulation, and taxes. Voters decisively rejected that agenda in this election.

We caution Republicans, however, against interpreting this election as an endorsement of their recent performance, which has too often fallen short of their professed principles. This election provides an opportunity for Republicans to prove themselves worthy of the support of grassroots free-market activists. Indeed, this may be the best opportunity they will have for a generation.

Will New Jersey Do the Right Thing On Cap-and-Trade?

By Phil Kerpen
Published August 04, 2010 | FoxNews.com

Cap-and-trade is stalled in Congress but it’s already up and running in 10 Northeastern states – and it isn’t pretty. With a drumbeat building in New Jersey for repeal of the state cap-and-trade legislation and attention in the global warming debate being increasingly focuses on the states, this could be a key turning point in the state-level fight over global warming taxes.

Mark Lagerkvist of New Jersey Watchdog has blown the lid off the secretive – and possibly corrupt – working of the so-called Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI, pronounced like the name Reggie), the nation’s only currently-operating cap-and-trade scheme for greenhouse gases and the model for a the proposed national program.
