Will a Republican save Obama’s War on Coal?

The only Senate Republican who has publicly sided with Obama in support of the disastrous Utility MACT regulation that would cripple coal-fired power plants and therefore imperil our fragile economic recovery is Tennessee’s Lamar Alexander, and he has been exposed to his constituents in a hard-hitting TV ad being run by my group, American Commitment.

Obama’s war on coal hits your electric bill

Obama’s War on Coal has already taken a remarkable toll on coal-fired power plants in America. Last week the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a shocking drop in power sector coal consumption in the first quarter of 2012. Coal-fired power plants are now generating just 36 percent of U.S. electricity, versus 44.6 percent just one year ago. It’s the result of an unprecedented regulatory assault on coal that will leave us all much poorer.

It’s time for Republicans to stand up for the free market, including agriculture

I once saw a very conservative member of Congress, someone I respect and with whom I have worked on many issues, tell a room full of free-market activists that he considers himself 99 percent free market capitalist and 1 percent socialist – when it comes to agricultural subsidies.

Monday, even the reliably pro-Obama New York Times woke up to the reality that Obama is now routinely bypassing Congress to govern by bureaucrat decree (a fact they could have learned in great detail in my book "Democracy Denied" by the way, but I digress).

Today, the United States Senate will have an opportunity to do something about it, when they vote later this afternoon on the Enzi Resolution, S.J. Res 36, which would stop one of Obama’s serial abusers of bureaucratic power, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in its tracks.

It's a fact -- tax hikes don’t work

President Obama and Democrats in Congress are trying to use the deficits created by their spending spree as an excuse to raise taxes. All we have to do is tax the millionaires and billionaires, they say, and our deficits will disappear.

But it’s an historical fact that higher tax rates don’t raise revenues.

When pressed, Obama admits the real goal is not revenue at all. He’s for tax hikes even if they hurt the economy and make the deficit worse. It’s a reckless approach that puts punishing success ahead of growing the economy and creating jobs.
