The Treasury Department’s Office of Environment and Energy has finally begun to turn over documents about its preparations for a carbon tax in response to transparency warrior Chris Horner’s Freedom of Information Act request. The documents provide solid evidence that the Obama administration and its allies in Congress have every intention of implementing a carbon tax if we fail to stop them.

Why Obama's pick for EPA should not be confirmed

Obama’s pick for EPA administrator, Gina McCarthy, is being praised for her role in developing the Obama administration’s fuel economy standards. Roll Call reports that McCarthy “oversaw… stricter fuel economy standards for cars and trucks.” NPR says “she played a key role in doubling automotive fuel-economy standards.” But when McCarthy herself was asked about the rules in a congressional oversight hearing, she said: “We do not regulate fuel economy.” Why?

Yes, according to a recent interview with Richard Cordray, the director of the so-called Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Cordray recently said: “That’s one of the things we’ve been exploring.”

Our politicians are behaving like addicts

Washington conventional wisdom has it exactly backwards; the modest spending cuts are seen as a disaster, and tax hikes as a cure-all for our fiscal problems. The debate is now more about whose taxes should be raised by how much and less about any spending cuts at all.

This is the behavior of addicts, and spendaholism is rampant in both parties.

Obama has continued Bush’s failed policies

Romney’s biggest missed opportunity in the second debate wasn’t on Libya – he’ll get to address that in depth in the third debate. It was on the question about how he would differ from Bush administration economic policies. It was a missed opportunity because he should have connected the dots between Obama and Bush to illustrate the accurate point that on the most significant dimensions of economic policy, Obama has accelerated Bush’s policy errors rather than reversing them.

To stop the war on American jobs we must end Obama's war on coal

At this point, you’d have to be blind not to see President Obama’s war on coal, and the devastating impact it is already having on coal mining communities and will, sooner rather than later, have on everyone who pays an electric bill. Does this administration care at all about saving American jobs? The latest announcement came from Alpha Natural Resources, which is laying off 1,200 coal miners, citing “a regulatory environment that’s aggressively aimed at constraining the use of coal.”

How AARP's support for ObamaCare was bought and paid for

In 1999, the American Association of Retired Persons officially changed its name to "AARP," which has since officially stood for nothing. So it’s fitting that in the orgy of corrupt backroom deals that resulted in the president’s deeply unpopular health care law, the worst of all was cut by AARP, an insurance purveyor that used to be a seniors group. With Obama taking to the airwaves touting AARP support, it’s important to remember how the dirty deal was done.

Last chance for the Keystone Pipeline

Blocking the Keystone XL pipeline has become an obsession of the environmental left, even though the economic consequences are severe in terms of lost jobs and access to energy resources. Now, after years of study, the State Department has opened an official comment docket on some final routing changes in Nebraska, but what should be a simple and quick approval could instead derail the project for good. Green groups are pouring in thousands of comments urging the State Department to start the entire review process from the very beginning. It would let Obama quietly study the pipeline to death.

Obama has now broken free of the Constitution

The Constitution is a document of specific, enumerated, and therefore limited federal powers that has, unfortunately, been stretched over the years to accommodate an ever larger and more intrusive federal government. Chief Justice John Roberts recently struck another blow against limited government by creating a new, unrestrained power to use taxes to compel activity (even if the proponents of the tax insist vehemently that it is not a tax!).

President Obama no doubt rejoiced, not just because his health care law would stand, but because he has long seen the Constitution’s limits on federal power as a problem to be overcome.
